Summary

This research project will analyze the origin and development of the Holy War –specially the Crusade - in Western Spain between 1050 and 1250 as well as its significance in relationship to the process of consolidation and legitimation of political power in the kingdoms of León-Castile, Navarre and Portugal.

This analysis will deal more specifically with four items:

  • The development of Ecclesiology and Sacred Violence
  • The role played by bishops in military activities linked to Holy War and Crusade
  • The implications of the relationship between kings and bishops for the Holy War`s ideology and praxis
  • The legitimation of royal power and Sacred Violence
